Browns sign LB

The Browns signed who?

Tony Grossi ‘broke’ the story, or at least he got part of it right. The newest Cleveland Brown is Shantee Orr. Yes, THE Shantee Orr.

Not helping? I know. Shantee played last year for the Texans and Jaguars. He began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Packers, but didn’t get his first game experience until playing for the Texans in 2003. He broke his leg and ankle that season and was put on the IR. He spent 2004 on and off the practice squad. His ‘breakout’ year came for Houston in 2005 when he started 12 games and recorded a then team record 7 sacks on the season, and 3 in a single game, also a Houston record. He had a down 2006, finishing with 1.5 sacks, after moving inside to accommodate Mario Williams, and was released in December of 2007. He finished the season playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Still not ringing a bell? Here’s a hint…

Yep. Orr played with Michigan from ’99 through ’02. He was mostly a DE for the Woodchucks, but played some outside linebacker as well. He had 13 sacks for UM and 79 tackles in his career. He joins fellow Michigan alum Braylon Edwards, whom he played 2 seasons with in college.

I do not expect hope this will not be the last addition we see the Browns make to the front seven. Orr may bring some versatility in that he has played both inside and outside linebacker positions, and could probably put his hand on the ground and rush the passer as well, but he is not an upgrade over Chaun Thompson. That really should tell you everything you need to know about this signing. This was a depth chart signing. Orr is not an impact player, and so if the Browns are looking to further improve the defensive front, they will wisely continue to pursue another option at LB.

Clark Haggans came through town this week, and left without a contract. In fact, I have not read where he was even offered a deal. Obviously I am not privy to the information that the league is, but I am somewhat confused as to why Haagans doesn’t have an offer yet? The LB market is drying up quickly, and Haggans, on paper, seems to be one guy that has something to offer. He is a bit on the smaller side, but he has been playing that size his whole life.

The other signing that may take place soon is with CB Bernie Sapp, as you may have read from the previous link. I don’t mind bringing Sapp in for insurance and even to compete for a starting spot. Again, this is not a high-impact signing, but at this point the only real impact players to come would have to be done via trade. That seems a little less likely. Of course, there are always those June 1st cuts. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see the Browns as players in that market as well.
